Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Memoirs (“Memoirs”, “we”, “us” or “our”) runs the Memoirs app for iPhone, a place to save and share moments with your friends and keep a bucket list of the places and adventures you want to experience. Memoirs is developed and operated from Nairobi, Kenya.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use Memoirs, how we use it, who can see it, and the choices you have. By using Memoirs, you agree to this policy and our Terms of Service.

In short:

2. Information we collect

Your account. Your email address and a password if you sign up with email; passwords are stored only in a secure, hashed form, and we never see them. If you use Sign in with Apple or Continue with Google, we receive an account identifier, your email address and, if you choose to share it, your name. With Sign in with Apple you can hide your email, in which case we receive a private relay address. We also store your name and username.

Your profile. If you add them: a profile photo, bio, birthday, profile stickers, and links to your Instagram, TikTok, X (Twitter) or Snapchat.

What you post. Moments, including photos, videos, voice notes, titles, captions and the memories you write, and places you pin (name, address, note, rating and the map position you choose). Your bucket list items and categories, and bucket posts with their photos, videos, captions, place details, contact details and spending.

What you do. Friends and friend requests, groups, people you tag, perspectives you add to friends' moments, comments and replies, likes, bookmarks and buckets, and your favourites and Rushmore lists.

Safety. Reports you make (the reason and anything you write), moderation decisions about your account or posts, and appeals you send.

Feedback. Messages you send us from the app, with the app version, device model and iOS version, so we can fix problems.

Usage information. We use PostHog, an analytics service, to understand how Memoirs is used. It records events such as opening and closing the app, screens viewed, signing up or in, and actions like posting a moment (for example the number of photos, not the photos themselves). These events are linked to your account ID and email address.

Device permissions. Memoirs only asks when you use a feature that needs them, and you can change them any time in iPhone Settings: the camera and photos to add photos and videos to your posts and profile, the microphone to record voice notes, and your location while using the app, only to centre the map when you pin a place. We don't track your location in the background or store your device's location; we only store the place you choose to pin.

Private posts. When you save a moment or bucket post as Private, or move a post to Private, it is stored only on your phone. It isn't uploaded to our servers, and we can't see or recover it. Deleting the app deletes it.

3. How we use your information

We process your information to provide the service you asked for, for our legitimate interests in keeping Memoirs safe and improving it, with your consent where we ask for it (for example device permissions), and where the law requires it.

4. Who can see your information

5. How we share your information

We don't sell your information. We share it only with companies that help us run Memoirs, who may use it only to provide their service to us:

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.

6. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, including under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019 and the EU's GDPR, you have the right to:

To make a request, email memoirsapp254@gmail.com. We'll reply within 30 days. If you're unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in Kenya, or to your local data protection authority.

7. International data transfers

Memoirs is run from Kenya and some of our providers are in the EU and the United States. When your information is transferred outside your country, we rely on our providers' safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, to protect it.

8. Children's privacy

Memoirs is not for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you're under 18, you need your parent or guardian's permission to use Memoirs. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, contact us and we'll delete it.

9. Retention of your information

10. Security of your information

We protect your information with encryption in transit, access rules that limit who can read each kind of data, and hashed passwords. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password and tell us if you notice anything suspicious.

11. Links to other sites

Memoirs may link to other websites and apps, such as the Instagram, TikTok, X or Snapchat profiles people add. We don't control those services, and their own privacy policies apply when you use them.

12. Changes to this policy

If we make important changes, we'll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. The date at the top shows when this policy was last updated.
